Contributions and Limitations of Food Gardening as a Sustainable Livelihood Strategy: Insights from a Case Study
Abstract
The sustainable livelihoods approach dominates the development discourse as a panacea for poverty reduction. It is an approach premised on the view that it leads to development interventions that capacitate the poor. This article examines the efficacy of food gardening as a sustainable livelihood strategy. The research took the form of a case study. While the insights gleaned, show that food gardening has the potential to lift people out of the poverty trap, the current implementation of food gardens as an anti-poverty strategy is beset with challenges such as, lack of capital; poor access to markets, and inadequate business skills.Downloads
